巴士從來都應該是眾人的。試想想：當你一人開著巴士，或是整部巴士只有你跟司機的時候，那種孤清和自我的不安，一早已蓋過獨享全車的滿足感；若沒有多幾個乘客，巴士就不是巴士。
有數十至百計乘客的巴士，有時是擠迫了點，令人煩厭，不過那纔更貼近巴士的本義，就是給眾人坐的大型汽車。當寒冷天至，巴士擠滿乘客，多數車窗緊閉，儘管那時空氣不甚流通，可是滿車生春。不過那樣的車廂要搬到夏季的話，恐怕乘客已爭先恐後下車，只得司機和巴士被太陽烤炙。
現在在香港街道跑的雙層巴士，過半都有冷氣機。回想起十或二十年前，過半的雙層巴士只能靠車窗調節車箱溫度；有風吹來也罷了，如果巴士在市區走的話，交通燈和其他車輛已可令它慢下來，壓根兒不用等高速行駛所帶來的風，結果乘客有如剛弄熱又塗了醬料的香腸──這種感覺，或解釋了為何巴士迷把非空調巴士喚作「熱狗」。
除了寒暑之異，巴士在一天裡都有不同的風光。早上往往令人想到要發奮工作，可是已坐下的乘客大多都不如此這樣想，寧願在正式工作前延續被迫中斷的睡眠。清醒的氣氛隨後會慢慢湧現，午間時的巴士裡，較多清醒的乘客在閱讀、聊天、沈思或凝視路訊通提供的影音內容，也少了孤身上路的乘客，取而代之的是三五親朋友好。
乘客的睡眼會在黃昏重現。下了班，完了應酬，或狂歡過後的人，一批一批的上巴士，在回到自己的床前，已先行在車上休息。那時的巴士，是他們的流動睡房。
